In the vicinity
of one and a half million years ago mankind discovered fire.
Since then, we have also been trying to control this phenomenon.
In recorded history, some of our earliest attempts consisted
in each citizen of Rome being ordered to keep a fire extinguishing
apparatus (basically a syringe) as a result of the Gauls burning
the city in 390 B.C. This was further developed in 64 A.D.
when Nero ordered regulations for the rebuilding of Rome after
a fire. These regulations stated that the external walls for
every building that was rebuilt had to be made of a fireproof
material.
In modern times we owe thanks to Henry Parmelee for the development,
and first patent, of the automatic sprinkler in 1874. The
engineering surrounding fire protection was further developed
by the founding of such organizations as Underwriters Laboratories
and the National Fire Protection Association. These organizations
helped start us down the road for today's fire protection
standards.
During the early 1960's we had another problem which still
needed to be addressed. With a constantly reoccurring theme
there were restaurants having fires resulting in dramatic
loss of property and life. This was addressed with the invention
of the dry chemical fire suppression system to be placed over
kitchen heated appliances. Advancing further in the 1980's
the wet chemical system was developed. This provided suppression
to the flames present as well as cooling down the appliances
involved. Today, in answer to the new appliances used in today's
modern restaurant kitchen, we have the UL300 system.
